Don’t abandon WASL

The Spokesman-Review

I believe the WASL should be kept; it keeps our teachers at the top of their game and it keeps our children learning. Remember, the WASL was only put in because our children in the U.S. and Washington state were far behind other schools and nations.

Our children are doing better at the WASL because teachers are doing a better job at teaching all of the requirements, not just the ones they are best at. It also gives us a way to see if our teachers are doing their job after all, if we can pay them $40,000 for eight-plus months’ work when the private sector only pays $20,000 and they have to teach religion on top of the other academics.

If you want to get rid of something, get rid of Superintendent of Public Instruction Randy Dorn; anybody who comes into a job knowing it pays $100,000-plus and thinks he deserves a raise on his first week – is that someone you would trust to educate our children?
