In brief: Some Valley signage to be banned
The Spokane Valley City Council moved Tuesday to restrict signs in the city center district envisioned by the Sprague-Appleway Revitalization Plan.
By informal consensus, the council called for a ban on sandwich board signs, electronically animated signs and billboards within the proposed urban center. Time-temperature signs and signs with text messages that scroll across a screen aren’t considered animated.
Existing billboards in the city center zone could be moved under an existing city ordinance that prohibits additional billboards but allows existing ones to be relocated to appropriate zones when they require renovation.
Animated signs would be allowed all along Sprague Avenue.
No final action on signs or any other part of the revitalization plan will be taken until the council releases a final draft and conducts a public hearing.
Burger sales will aid Behan nursery
The annual Burgers with a Heart fundraiser will kick off Monday at area Red Robin Restaurants. The ninth annual event raises money for the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.
The restaurant will donate 50 cents for every burger sold at its Spokane and Coeur d’Alene locations between Monday and Feb. 22. The Spokane Valley location is near the Valley Mall at 14736 E. Indiana Ave.
Liberty Lake
Library to close during move
The Liberty Lake Library plans to close for a week beginning Feb. 23 so staff can move materials into the new location at 23123 E. Mission Ave. The building, purchased last year by the city, will house the library and the new police station and has been under renovation for the past few months.
The library must vacate its current location at 1421 N Meadowwood Lane by the end of the month. Library director Pamela Mogan hopes the library will open at its new, larger location on March 2. “We’re going to try,” she said.

Camp Fire candy on sale Saturday
Camp Fire USA Inland Northwest Council will begin selling Camp Fire Candy today at local grocery stores and neighborhoods, through March 1.
Candies include everybody’s favorite Smooth Mint Patties, Almond Roca, Almond Caramel Clusters and P-Nuttles, and will be for sale for $5 each.
The annual fundraiser benefits Camp Fire USA programs benefits boys and girls year-round.
