Liberty, Davenport open with wins

Liberty and Davenport prevailed in Bi-County League 2B girls basketball playoff games Monday night.

Junior Kelly Hennessey scored a career-high 19 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to lead Liberty past visiting Reardan 59-45 in the first round.

Davenport used a second-half rally to overcome visiting Lind-Ritzville 46-43 in a tiebreaker for second place, securing the win on two late Miranda Mielke free throws.

Liberty 59, Reardan 45: The Indians (10-11) got within seven points in the fourth quarter after trailing by 11 at the end of three, but Hennessey’s fourth 3 squelched the rally. Taz Brooks had a career-high 13 points for Liberty (14-7). Amber Perleberg led Reardan with 12.

The tournament moves to Colfax on Thursday, with Liberty playing No. 1 seed Colfax at 6:30 p.m. Reardan’s next assignment is 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Davenport 46, Lind-Ritzville 43: Mariah Mielke led Davenport (13-7) with 26 points. Kelsey Arlt had 15 for L-R (13-8), hitting three 3-pointers. She tried a nearly half-court shot at the end for a tie.

Lind-Ritzville plays Northwest Christian at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Ritzville with the winner advancing to play Davenport at 5 p.m. Thursday in Colfax. The loser plays Reardan.

District 9 2B

Garfield-Palouse 50, Walla Walla Valley 21: The Vikings (12-6) got double-figure scoring from three players and a double-double from Elisha Lopez – 15 points, 10 rebounds – in the crossover game.

Boys basketball

District 9 2B

Garfield-Palouse 94, Walla Walla Valley 31: Brock Slocum hit 10 of 11 shots from the field, including 7 of 8 3-pointers, in a 28-point game that led the Vikings (14-3) to victory in the crossover game that moved them within a win of the District 9 2B North championship.

Gar-Pal entertains Asotin in Palouse Friday and a win would earn it the title.

Inland Empire League

Lewiston 72, Post Falls 47: Ryan Strong scored nine of his 13 points in the first quarter to help the Bengals (13-2, 5-1) off to a fast start as they cruised past the visiting Trojans (13-4, 4-3).

Jared Heitzman led Lewiston with 14 points, 10 in the third period. Justin Carter’s 11 led PF.

Non-league

Lakeland 59, Bonners Ferry 41: A 22-point third-quarter by the Hawks (5-12) ended the comeback plans of the home-standing Badgers (4-10).

BF’s Aaron Hoisington led the scoring with 17 points. Cody Moreland led Lakeland with 16.

Track and field

Idaho’s Paul Dittmer is the Western Athletic Conference track athlete of the week for a performance that included a school-record 7.93 sconds in the 60-meter hurdles.

Vandal Matthew Wauters is the field athlete of the week. He twice met the NCAA provisional standard in the weight throw with a weekend best of 67 feet.
