Shanholtzer sparks Cusick in opener

Spencer Shanholtzer finished with 28 points and eight rebounds Wednesday as Cusick defeated visiting Wilbur-Creston 70-35 to open the District 7 1B boys basketball tournament.

Tyler Edwards added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers, who finished with 26 steals. Shanholtzer and Edwards were a combined 17 of 23 from the floor.

There were three other openers at the tournament, which continues Saturday. In winner-to-state games at Deer Park, Cusick (16-4) will play Almira/Coulee-Hartline (17-4) at 7:30 p.m. and Wellpinit (19-1) will meet Curlew (12-9) at 6. In loser-out games at Riverside, Northport (4-16) will play Odessa (6-11) at 6 p.m. and Inchelium (5-15) will meet W-C (6-10) at 7:30.

ACH 72, Inchelium 29: Cody Jess scored 21 points and Derek Isaak added 15 points and five assists as the Warriors defeated the visiting Hornets at Coulee City. Kyle Tucker added 12 points and seven rebounds for ACH.

Wellpinit 70, Northport 58: Cody Flett scored 28 points to power the Redskins past the visiting Mustangs. Wellpinit’s Kennedy Seyler added 17 points.

Curlew 61, Odessa 42: Jordan Wakefield scored 15 of his 26 points in the second quarter to lift the visiting Cougars past the Tigers. Wakefield hit 9 of 12 from the field and 8 of 11 from the free-throw line.

District 7 1A tournament

Chewelah 53, Kettle Falls 37: Dallas Garner scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures as the fourth-seeded Cougars (12-8) eliminated the fifth-seeded Bulldogs (3-14) at Chewelah. The Cougars will play top-seeded Freeman at 8 p.m. Friday at Mead High for a berth in the title game. Second-seeded Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) meets No. 3 Newport at 5 p.m. in Friday’s other game.

Inland Empire League

Lake City 67, Sandpoint 40: Jason Wheelock scored 14 points and Logan Frederickson added 13 points and five assists as the visiting Timberwolves (14-4, 7-2) defeated the Bulldogs (3-12, 1-8) to take over first place. LC’s Nate Frisbie added 10 points and seven rebounds. Spencer Swerin had 14 points and eight rebounds for Sandpoint.

Coeur d’Alene 60, Lewiston 50: Connor White scored 17 points as the host Vikings (8-11, 4-5) knocked the Bengals (14-3, 6-2) out of first place. Devon Austin and Deon Watson combined for 26 points and 13 rebounds for CdA, which lost to Lewiston by 19 points two weeks ago. Lewiston’s Ryan Strong scored 14 points.

Post Falls 51, Moscow 46: The host Trojans (14-5, 5-4) used a 13-2 second-quarter advantage to turn back the Bears (8-8, 4-5).

St. Maries at Clark Fork, canceled: With postseason approaching, the non-league game won’t be made up.

Girls

Bi-County 2B tournament

Lind-Ritzville 56, Northwest Christian 45: Kelsey Arlt and Devon Killian combined for 30 points and 14 rebounds as the Broncos (14-8) rallied past the visiting Crusaders (9-12). Cassie Cole added five steals and four assists for the Broncos, who trailed 30-24 after NWC hit six 3-pointers in the first half. L-R will meet Davenport at 5 p.m. today at Colfax for a berth in the title game. NWC will meet Reardan at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Colfax in a winner-to-district, loser-out game. Tonight’s other game is top-seeded Colfax against No. 4 Liberty at 6:30.

District 9 1B tournament

Rosalia 40, Touchet 35: Meaghan Reddish scored 12 points and Briann and Katelyn Maley combined for 14 rebounds to lead the host Spartans (9-12) past the Indians. Rosalia plays at top-seeded Colton at 7:30 p.m. Friday for a berth in the title game. Zoe Weaver scored a game-high 14 points for Touchet, which plays a loser-out game at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Endicott.

LaCrosse-Washtucna 43, Tri-Cities Prep 19: Della Fleming and Kelly Zimmer combined for 27 points to lead the Tigercats (7-0) past the visiting Jaguars. L-W shot 20 of 68 from the floor while TCP was 8 of 39. The Tigercats play second-seed St. John-Endicott at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. John for a berth in the title game. TCP plays a loser-out game at 1 p.m. Monday at Endicott.
