StageWest ready to ride the rails
StageWest Community Theatre of the West Plains will be putting on a melodrama, “Love Rides the Rails; or, Will the Mail Train Ride Tonight?” beginning next week at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 639 Elm St., Cheney.
The play is directed by Patty Steen and the audience is encouraged to boo and hiss at the villain and cheer for the hero.
The evening performances will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 20, 21, 27, 28, March 6 and 7. The Sunday performances will be at 3 p.m. on Feb. 22, March 1 and March 8.

Senior softball players sought
Organizers are looking for elite competitive men softball players 60 years and older to play in U.S. Senior softball tournaments.
“We have great sponsors. Existing players have earned 20-plus world championships in the past,” said Dave Gunderson. “If you are a team player, can play and are competitive, we want you.”

Camp Fire USA selling candy
Camp Fire USA Inland Northwest Council is selling Camp Fire Candy at local grocery stores and neighborhoods, through March 1.
Candies include Smooth Mint Patties, Almond Roca, Almond Caramel Clusters and P-Nuttles, and will be for sale for $5 each.
The annual fundraiser benefits Camp Fire USA programs benefits boys and girls all year-round.

Marmot March taking registrants
The fourth annual Marmot March kids run will be held May 2 at 10 a.m., downtown in Riverfront Park.
The 1.2-mile course is organized by the Lilac Bloomsday Association and allows kids to participate in a Bloomsday weekend race that is catered for them.
The race is similar to Bloomsday, greeted by area mascots and cheerleading teams, and at the finish line, snacks by Franz Bakeries are available for them. Franz is a sponsor for the race. Other activities include face painting and photo opportunities with area high school and collegiate mascots. Also, everyone who crosses the finish line receives a finisher’s blue ribbon.
The entry fee is $10 and includes a T-shirt and paint set. Kids are encouraged to paint their T-shirt in advance and then wear it during the Marmot March. Shirts are required for entry into the race. Space is limited to the first 300 entries.

Spokane parks job fair held Sunday
The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department will host its 17th annual Job Fair on Sunday in the Riverfront Park Pavilion from noon to 4 pm.
The Job Fair will provide information for more than 200 spring and summer positions for Riverfront Park, including attraction attendants for the Carrousel, SkyRide, Tour Train, and Pavilion rides, food and attraction cashiers, food service cooks, storeroom attendants, and more.
Riverfront Park staff will be on hand to answer employment questions and distribute applications. Applicants must be 16 or older by March 9. Some positions require applicants to be 18 or older to apply.
Seasonal positions begin mid-March and most employees work 15 to 20 hours per week. Some positions require 40 hours per week and during the summer, 30 to 40 hours per week. Wages begin at $8.65 per hour.
Aquatics positions will also be available. Lifeguard applicants need only be 15 years old and prepared to attend a training class during the spring.
Applications will be available in the Riverfront Park lobby, located in the main Pavilion near the IMAX Theater, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.

Credit class held Wednesday
Community Frameworks, 315 W. Mission Ave., will hold a series of classes to help potential homebuyers better understand credit, personal finances and mortgage lending starting Wednesday at 6 p.m.
This first class will discuss “Understanding Credit” and will be followed with “Managing your Finances” on March 18, “Mortgage Basics” on April 15 and “Understanding Credit” will repeat again on May 20.

Libraries offer online tutoring
The Spokane County Library District is now providing students in grades K-12, introductory-level college students, and adult learners with free homework help.
A new online service Tutor.com’s Live Homework Help is available seven days a week and provides free help from qualified tutors. Professional tutors can assist students with math, science, social studies and English via the Internet. Tutors can also aid with resume-building and proofing for job seekers of any age.
The Web site is accessible by visiting www.scld.org, and students can connect to the site from the Spokane County Public Library or from their own computer from 2 to 10 p.m. A library card will be required for remote access.
