Good schools deter crime

The Spokesman-Review

Voters in the Mead School District are being asked to consider renewing an existing levy that provides one-fifth of our district’s budget. In these challenging economic times, it might be tempting to vote no, but doing so would lead to a “pay now or pay later” scenario.

Recently, I went to the state Capitol and watched legislative hearings on the state’s K-12 education system. One speaker stuck out. A county sheriff who was a former teacher eloquently spoke that the best crime prevention strategy is quality education. He talked about how quality education can help young people learn skills that not only prepare them for the work force, but also help them to become good neighbors and responsible adults.

The Mead School District has a long-standing reputation for its innovative programs, top-notch staff and smaller class sizes that maximize student learning. As a taxpayer and parent, I will be voting yes to ensure that this quality education provided in Mead continues.
