Whitworth crushes PLU

Calvin Jurich knocked down 9 of 10 shots from the floor and finished with game highs of 21 points and seven assists and Nate Montgomery added a double-double to power the Whitworth Pirates to an 83-57 victory over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in Northwest Conference play Saturday night at Olson Auditorium in Tacoma.

Montgomery tallied 12 points, a game-high 11 rebounds and two blocked shots for the Pirates (18-5, 10-4) who dominated both halves of play.

Tim Sellereit tossed in 14 points and David Riley scored 12 for the Pirates, who shot 61 percent from the floor in the second half and 54 percent for the game.

The victory, coupled with Lewis & Clark’s 60-58 loss to Willamette, leaves the Pirates alone in second place in conference play. Puget Sound (14-0) leads the NWC.

Pacific Lutheran was led by Curtis Trondsen, who came off the bench to score 18 points in 22 minutes of play.

Whitworth owned the boards by a 37-25 margin and made 18 of its 22 free-throw attempts. Whitworth’s starters outscored the Chukars starters 66-17.

The Pirates have two games remaining in regular-season play. They play at Whitman (9-14, 5-9) on Friday at 8 p.m. and host Lewis & Clark (15-8, 9-5) next Sunday at 3 p.m.

CC Spokane 80, Treasure Valley 62: Zach Humphrey hit all six of his 3-point attempts and finished with a game-high 21 points to spark the Sasquatch (18-5, 10-2) to a victory over the Chukars (4-22, 1-11) in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play in Ontario, Ore.

Kevin Cameron tossed in 10 points and handed out five assists for the Sasquatch, who remained tied with Yakima Valley atop the East Division standings.

CC Spokane shot 52 percent (27 of 52) from the floor for the game and a blistering 58 percent (14 of 24) from beyond the 3-point arc. The Sasquatch also had a decided 36-25 advantage on the boards.

CC Spokane buried eight 3-pointers in 14 tries in the first 20 minutes and led 43-26 at the break.

Manny Lopez led the Chukars with 19 points.

Treasure Valley shot 38.5 percent from the floor for the game (20 of 52).

North Idaho 74, Eastern Utah 72: Melvin Jones and Renado Parker turned in identical 18-point, five-rebound performances to help the 12th-ranked Cardinals (23-3, 8-3) slip past the visiting Golden Eagles (19-6, 5-6) for the second straight night in Scenic West Athletic Conference action at Post Falls High School.

All of Jones’ scoring came from behind the 3-point line as he connected on 6 of 8 attempts. He also handed out four assists. Parker hit 7 of 11 shots from the floor, but made just 4 of 9 free throws.

Phillip Thomas paced the Golden Eagles with 16 points, while Stephen Franklin scored 15.

Eastern Utah reserve Darington Hobson finished with a double-double – 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
