Pirates men beat Whitman

Four players scored at least 20 points as Whitworth outscored Whitman 97-87 in Walla Walla on Tuesday night to strengthen its hold on second place in Northwest Conference men’s basketball.

Calvin Jurich led the way with 22 points with David Riley adding 21 points and 10 rebounds. Bo Gregg and Tim Sellereit each scored 20 points for the Pirates (19-5, 11-4), combining to hit 15 of 24 shots.

Whitworth closes the regular season at home Sunday afternoon against Lewis & Clark in what could be a battle for a second seed and a home game.

Chris Faidley and Jordan Wheeler had 12 each for the Missionaries (9-15, 5-10).

Women’s basketball

Whitman 81, Whitworth 56: The Missionaries (17-7, 9-6) clinched a playoff berth by rolling past the Pirates (12-12, 6-9) in Walla Walla.

Whitman used a 23-5 run to build a 20-point lead in the first half. The Whits shot only 25 percent, while Whitworth connected at a 54 percent rate for a 42-22 lead.

Whitworth junior Cassie Pilkinton led all scorers with 22 points. Sophomore Liz Horiatis added 12 with 10 rebounds.

Women’s golf

Amy Eneroth tied for eighth and Jessica Black tied for 14th, lifting Washington State to fifth place at the Qdoba Invitational at the Don Shula Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla.

Enroth shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish at 8-over 224 for the three rounds for the 19th top 25 finish of her career. Black, who was 10 over, had her 18th top-25 finish.

The Cougars finished at 909, 18 strokes behind Georgia State. Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville earned medalist honors with a 2-over 218.
