Fat Tuesday events planned

Christians in Spokane will be observing the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday services and Mardi Gras events.

•Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, will present a Mardi Gras party Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The evening will include a pancake dinner, pancake races and other games.

The church will also present a quiet, meditative Ash Wednesday service Wednesday at 7 p.m.

•St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th, will celebrate Fat Tuesday this Tuesday at 7 p.m. with jazz Mass composed by Dan Keberle, a professor of music at Whitworth University.

School registration

First Presbyterian Christian School, 318 S. Cedar, will present an open house Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon for parents of students starting the first grade this fall.

The school also offers kindergarten and preschool for children ages 3 and 4.

Speakers and seminars

•Gonzaga’s Thematic Programming Committee will present Gary Chamberlain, a Christian ethics professor at Seattle University, Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Barbieri Courtroom at the Gonzaga University School of Law.

Chamberlain will speak on the topic, “Spirit Hovers over the Waters: Stories of Saving Waters and Saving the Waters.”

•Life Center Church, 1202 N. Government Way, and Colonial Clinic of Spokane will present a free seminar on the impact and intervention on addictions and dysfunctional family systems Friday at 6:30 p.m.

•Bethany Presbyterian Church, 301 S. Freya, will present Rev. Maqsood Kamil, executive secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Pakistan, and Khuram Dastgir Khan, a member of the Muslim League Party in Pakistan’s National Parliament Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The speakers are visiting to start an interfaith dialogue.

The two will also speak at the Spokane Islamic Center, 6411 E. Second, on Sunday.

Lunch will be at 1 p.m. and the presentation will begin at 2 p.m. The topic will be “Challenges of Christian-Muslim Relations in Pakistan.”

Movie night

Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Nevada St., will present the movie, “Young Mr. Lincoln,” Friday at 7 p.m.

The movie, made in 1939, is a fictional biography that follows the early legal career of Abraham Lincoln and stars Henry Fonda.

The Christian Singles Fellowship will hold its monthly meeting Saturday at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of North Addison Baptist Church, 6120 N. Addison.
