EWU due apologies

The Spokesman-Review

As a current student of Eastern Washington University, it is safe to assume that Eagles athletics helps make the college experience that much better.

Whether it is football in the fall or hockey in the winter, a majority of us find ourselves attending these fun-filled events.

With the recent revelations regarding our football team for the next three years, that experience has dimmed slightly. By putting the team on probation and banning the ’09 team from participating in any postseason activities, it not only affects the players, but the whole community. It lets down students, faculty, alumni, community members and the current players who had nothing to do with the violations.

The person to blame here is Paul Wulff. Yes, the university did ignore some violations, but the man closest to the system should have stepped up and fixed the problem rather than let it continue for years. Those at fault, especially Wulff and the players of those seasons, should be blamed, not the current team.

The solution to the problems being faced would not be to punish the EWU football program for three years and then give Wulff a slap on the wrist with a three-day punishment. He should be taking the fall for this. He and those at fault should be serving out the three years’ probation. Current and future Eastern football players should not be paying the price for actions that were out of their control and definitely not their fault.

I hope some form of an appeal and apology will be made in the current players’ favor. Their unfair punishment is not only affecting them but the whole community. Wulff and the others involved should be paying that price and apologizing to the Eastern Washington University community.
