Gonzaga baseball team wins third straight

The Gonzaga baseball team finished its season-opening weekend with a 13-9 win over No. 10 Missouri at the Grand Canyon Classic on Sunday in Phoenix.

The Zags (3-1) won their final three games of the weekend, including two against the Tigers (1-3).

Gonzaga had 20 hits against Missouri on Sunday, with six players recording multiple hits. Senior first baseman Ryan Wiegand and junior left fielder Mark Castellitto each had four hits and scored three times.

Castellitto had his first home run of the season and finished with four RBIs.

Bulldogs starter Steven Ames (1-0) got the win in his first start of the season. Reedy Berg worked the final three innings to preserve the win.

•Andrew Darr’s suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in the winning run as No. 22 Arkansas beat Washington State 4-3 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Cougars reliever Jeremy Johnson (0-1) couldn’t come up with Darr’s bunt, allowing Collin Kuhn to score from third.

Washington State (0-3) begins a six-game homestand against Gonzaga on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
