Chiefs vs. Giants live on FSN

The Spokane Chiefs took two steps back last week, making this week’s four-games-in-five-nights stretch all the more important.

The Chiefs travel to Vancouver today to take on the Western Conference-leading Giants (49-7-1-3) tonight in Western Hockey League action. The game will be televised on FSN beginning at 7 p.m.

Spokane (39-18-0-3) will continue its busy week with a game in Kamloops on Wednesday night before returning home to host the Portland Winter Hawks on Friday and Tri-City Americans – who the Chiefs are chasing for the U.S. Division lead – on Saturday.

After winning 17 of 19 games through last Wednesday and pulling within four points of the Ams (43-16-0-3), the Chiefs dropped two games over the weekend – including a 2-1 loss to Tri-City on Saturday – and fell eight points behind the Americans with one game in hand.

EWU men face Seattle U. tonight

Eastern Washington’s men will step outside of the Big Sky Conference tonight to entertain Seattle University in a non-league matchup that tips off at 7:05 at Reese Court.

The Eagles (12-15 overall, 6-8 in the Big Sky) expect to have their hands full against SU (17-6), an NCAA Division I team that hasn’t played since Feb. 16, when it posted its eighth straight win by thumping Cal State Bakersfield 78-54 on the road.

The Redhawks are paced offensively by Austen Powers, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, who is averaging 12.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, and Michael Wright, a 6-5 senior wing, who is averaging 11 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds.

Benny Valentine’s average of 15.7 points per game continues to lead EWU, which will close regular-season play at home against Portland State on Saturday in a game that could determine whether the Eagles qualify for the six-team Big Sky tournament that opens on March 7.

The Eagles are currently in seventh place.
