Gar-Pal boys, girls reach title game

Garfield-Palouse and Liberty Christian will play for the boys championship of the District 9 2B basketball tournament Friday night at 8:30 at Walla Walla Community College after winning semifinal games Monday night.

That will follow the girls title game at 7 between Garfield-Palouse and Asotin.

Monday night, Tyson (16 points) and Jordan (14) Palmer combined for 30 points to lead the Gar-Pal boys past Waitsburg-Prescott 52-40. The Vikings hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter in breaking open a close game. Liberty Christian defeated Tekoa-Oakesdale 61-46.

T-O will face Asotin at 1:30 p.m. and Waitsburg-Prescott meets Dayton at 8:30 in loser-out games Wednesday.

On the girls side Monday, Asotin got past Pomeroy 70-67 and Garfield-Palouse beat Dayton 52-43. In loser-out games Wednesday, Dayton faces DeSales at noon and Pomeroy plays Tekoa-Oakesdale at 7.

Idaho Boys 2A District I-II

Potlatch 71, Coeur d’Alene Charter 66 (OT): Skyler Wotring’s two free throws for the Loggers with five seconds left in regulation capped a 23-point quarter that forced overtime and they went on to eliminate the visiting Panthers. Wotring finished with a game-high 23 points. Bob Schrack scored 22 and Wes Billingslead 18 for Coeur d’Alene Charter (11-11).

Prep bowling

Led by the Shadle Park’s championship in Boys Division II, Spokane-area competitors did themselves proud in the 45th Washington State Bowling Proprietors Association State High School Varsity Championships during the weekend in Tukwila.

Shadle Park, led by division MVP Bryce Engstrom and Dalton Shears, had a scratch pinfall of 8,925 and compiled 47 points for a five-point win over Mark Morris. Rogers finished seventh with 8,551 pins and 31 points.

In Boys Division III, Cheney (7,979, 34) was eighth and Mt. Spokane (8,220, 30) 10th.

In the girls team event, Shadle Park (6,200, 35) was third and Cheney (5,914, 23) sixth.

Kayla Fencl of Rogers, who had a 165 average, was a Girls All-State selection.

Shears, who had the second-best average in Division II, a 199, and Chris Gray of Rogers (196) were Boys Division II first-team All-State selections while Carlos Croswhite of Rogers (185) was a second-team pick. Jalen Hines of Mt. Spokane (189) was a first-team choice in Boys Division III.

The Moses Lake boys (9,348, 38) were third in Division I and the Chiefs had two All-State selections, Shanice Brice, who had the girls’ top average, a 200, and Billy Brice, who averaged a second-best 227, on the Boys Division I first team.
