In brief: Middle school plans oldies dance

Cheney Middle School and the Cheney Baseball Association will hold a “Retro Dance” with music from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for all Cheney Middle School students.

Tickets are $3 and are available today and Friday during student lunches. Some tickets will be available at the door.

The proceeds will benefit the CMS PTSA and the Cheney Baseball Association.

Belarus lecturer to study at EWU

Aleh Kopach, a senior lecturer in the College of Humanities at the Belarus State University in Minsk and a Fulbright Scholar, will be conducting research at Eastern Washington University through June 19. The focus of his study will be in the formation and comparison of stream names in the United States and how they reflect the relationship of current theories of structural and cognitive linguistics.

The Fulbright Scholar Program was established after World War II as an initiative of Sen. J. William Fulbright and is the U.S. government’s flagship educational exchange program. Each year the Fulbright Program grants approximately 6,000 scholarships to citizens of the United States and other nations, making it one of the largest and most diversified exchange programs in the world.

Benefit dance will be March 12

Eagle Entertainment will host a dance showcase at Eastern Washington University’s Showalter Auditorium on March 12 at 7 p.m. The event is a benefit for Hannah Baumann, a local sixth grader recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, and her family.

The showcase will offer a variety of performances, including one from Baumann. Tickets are $2 per person and $1 for EWU students.

West Plains

Math fair planned at Windsor today

Windsor Elementary School, 5504 W. Hallet Road, will hold the Windsor Math Fair today from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Families will participate in math activities prepared by Eastern Washington University math students and will have the opportunity to visit math Web sites in the school’s computer lab.

Author will discuss Maxey book

The Spokesman-Review columnist and author, Jim Kershner, will discuss his book, “Carl Maxey: A Fighting Life,” today at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre of Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth University Campus, 300 W. Hawthorne Road.

Part of Whitworth’s celebration of Black History Month, Kershner will discuss the life of the first African-American in Spokane to pass the bar exam.
