Area residents complete basic military training

Seven area residents graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Derek Baskin graduated in 2008 from Ephrata Senior High School and is the son of Martin Baskin, of Soap Lake, Wash.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Joshua Dehler is the son of William Dehler, of Davenport, Wash., and a 2008 graduate of Christopher Heritage School in Edwall, Wash.

Air Force Airman Lucas Gamache graduated in 2001 from Mead High School and is the son of Shannon and Deb Millard, of Nine Mile Falls.

Air Force Airman Dustin Horton is the son of Dan Horton of Spokane, and is a 2008 graduate of Mt. Spokane High School.

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Shelby Lyon is the daughter of Michael and Julie Lyon, of Spokane, and is a 2007 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Air Force Airman Adam Oles is a 2005 graduate of Ferris High School.

•Three area residents recently graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

Army Reserve Pvt. Justin Marchand is a 2007 graduate of Mt. Spokane High School.

Army National Guard Pvt. Darrell Russell is the grandson of Judy Calvert, of Medical Lake, and Darrell Russell, of Hauser, Idaho. He is a 2005 graduate of Deer Park High School.

Army Pvt. Richard Smith is the son of Rick and Valerie Smith, of Danville, Wash., and graduated in 2000 from Curlew High School.

•Two residents graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps leader development and assessment course at Fort Lewis in Tacoma.

Daniel Durtschi is the son of Jay and Delina Durtschi, of Spokane Valley, and in 1996 graduated from Central Valley High School.

Miles Wellein is the son Steve Wellein, of Soap Lake, Wash., and Carol Beard, of Seattle. He graduated in 2005 from Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle.

Lance Knoles was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts.

For his project he collected food and money for SCRAPS animal shelter in Spokane Valley.

Knoles is a junior at Kettle Falls High School and the son of Ed and Georgie Knoles, of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Cheryl Knoles of Spokane Valley.

Matthew Whitford , a former resident of Spokane and 1998 graduate of Rogers High School, was promoted to staff sergeant in the Air Force. He is stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota.

Esther Schara, of Spokane was placed on the Honor Roll for 2008 fall semester at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., for her academic achievement. Schara is a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Leslie Cohen, of Spokane, was named to the fall semester 2008 Dean’s list at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. She is the daughter of Arnold and Colleen Cohen, of Spokane.

•Carroll College in Helena recently announced three local students named to the fall semester dean’s list for the 2008-09 academic year.

The students are Loni Page, of Spokane Valley; John McKenna, of Mead; and Ameer Elaimy, of Spokane.
