Allegro series examines Bach, Couperin

From staff reports

Spokane’s Allegro Baroque and Beyond series will examine two of classical music’s most famous families – Germany’s Bachs and France’s Couperins – in “A Tale of Two Dynasties” on Friday.

The Couperins, attached to the Royal Court at Versailles and in Paris, will be represented by Armand-Louis Couperin’s Sonata in C Minor for violin and basso continuo, and cousin Francois Couperin’s Sixth Concert from “Les Gouts Reunis,” with its famed “Air de Diable (Air of the Devil).”

Bach compositions will include J.S. Bach’s G Major gamba sonata, along with works by two of his sons: Wilhelm Friedemann’s Trio Sonata in F, and Carl Ph. Emmanuel’s Siciliano and Oboe Sonata.

Allegro Artistic Directors Beverly Biggs (harpsichord) and David Dutton (oboe) will be joined by Bay Area early music specialists Anthony Martin (baroque violin) and John Dornenburg (viola de gamba).

The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague. Tickets are $10 to $25, by calling (509) 455-6865 or online at www.allegrobaroque.org.
