Corbin Art Center classes starting soon

Beginning Jan. 20, winter quarter classes and workshops will be offered at Corbin Art Center in the Daniel House, 507 W. 7th Ave.

Classes and workshops include:

It’s for Mom and Me: Tall Tales, for ages 3 to 5, Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., for seven weeks beginning Jan. 20. The cost is $45.

Mosaic Picture in Glass, Wednesdays from 6to 9 p.m., for four weeks beginning Jan. 28. The cost is $54.

Ice Age Camp, for ages 6 to 11, Jan. 30, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $29.

Focaccia for Sandwiches, Jan. 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $22.

Digital Scrapbooking, Feb. 9, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The cost is $12.

Organic Soil Fertility Workshop, Feb. 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $12.

Digital Cameras: What they are, which to buy, and how to use it, March 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $12.

Ice skating lessons set to begin

The Learn to Skate sessions at the Riverfront Park Ice Palace will begin Saturday for children ages 4 and older.

The six-week lessons will run through Feb. 14 and will cost $59 per student or $44.25 for Ice Palace pass holders.

Also beginning Saturday is Learn to Play Hockey and Parent and Tot Lessons.

Carrousel closed before anniversary

Spokane’s historic Looff Carrousel in Riverfront Park will be closed for its annual maintenance and restoration until Feb. 27.

The Carrousel will reopen for a yearlong 100 Years of Carrousel celebration. Spokane’s historic landmark will turn 100 on July 18.

A tentative calendar of events includes a grand reopening on March 21 with antique cars and fire trucks, a historical tour, birthday cake, and more. Author Nona Hengen will sign her book “Carrousel Odyssey” on April 18. A caricature artist, balloon animal artist and more will be a part of the celebration on May 16. On June 13 there will be an ice carving demonstration, a coloring contest and Hengen will return. An old fashioned 4th of July celebration is also planned.

On July 18, the Carrousel’s 100th anniversary celebration will include free Carrousel rides, commemorative tokens, birthday cake and more. And the yearlong celebration will continue through December with Victorian style decorations and breakfast with Santa.

Bloomsday sign-up Web site open

Early bird registration for Bloomsday is now open at www.bloomsdayrun.org.

Runners who sign up by Feb. 15 will have a chance to win a trip for two to the St. Patrick’s Day Dash in Seattle on March 15.

The 33rd annual Bloomsday will be May 3. Full details will be released in March at locations throughout the Inland Northwest.

National Skating Month celebrated

On Saturday the Spokane and Lilac City Figure Skating Clubs will celebrate National Skating Month at the Riverfront Park Ice Palace with prize give-a-ways, exhibitions from local figure skaters, free mini-lessons, information from local skating clubs, and free skate rental, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

National Skating Month is in its eighth year. The goal is to reach out to the community by offering the fundamentals of ice skating from professionally trained instructors and skaters and increase awareness and participation in ice skating.

MLK celebrations calendar

Spokane Community College, Spokane Falls Community College and the Institute for Extended Learning have planned events and presentations, beginning Wednesday, to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

SCC will host “Human Rights vs. Civil Rights: Combating All the Reasons to Hate” on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The event will be held in the Lair Student Center, Building 6, 1810 N. Greene St., and will also include a cultural commonalities fair is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featuring international artists, informational displays by community organizations and performances.

The IEL will hold a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the INB Performing Arts Center, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd., on Jan. 19 at 10 a.m.
