In brief: CV rallies, wins at Mead

Bears gain ground in standings

Central Valley rallied from a seven-point, first-quarter deficit to defeat Mead 42-41 Tuesday night and close ground on the Panthers in the Greater Spokane League.

The visiting Bears (8-3) scored with 20 seconds remaining and weathered a late attempt by Mead (8-2) for the victory. Mead had won at CV earlier this year by rallying from a big first-half deficit.

CV didn’t fall as far behind, but it had to come from behind and returned the favor at Mead.

Freshmen Brooke Gallaway, with 15 points, and Whitney Black, with 12, paced the Bears.

Tifa Puletasi had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Panthers.

Lewis and Clark 67, Ferris 26: The Saxons hung close to their South Hill rival for a quarter at the Arena. Then the wheels came off. Ahead 15-10 after a quarter, the bigger Tigers had their way, Sarah Kliewer in particular. LC outscored Ferris 26-5 in the second quarter.

The 6-foot-2 Kliewer finished the half with 16 points and six rebounds. She scored eight straight points in the first quarter after the Tigers fell behind 4-2 and had as many in the second quarter as LC put the game out of reach. By halftime, the lead ballooned to 41-15.

Kliewer finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Jeneva Anderson finished with 18 as the pair outscored the Saxons by themselves.

LC won its 44th consecutive game.

University 45, Gonzaga Prep 28: The host Titans (6-5) turned the tables on the Bullpups (6-5) in their second meeting of the year. Zoe Scott had eight of her game-high 17 points in the third quarter, when U-Hi opened a 12-point lead. Chenise Pakootas had four steals.

East Valley 46, North Central 22: The visiting Knights limited the Indians to 11 points over the final three quarters and pulled away. Jeni White had a big night for EV, scoring 20 points. NC’s Tara VanWeerdhuizen had 13 rebounds and five blocked shots to go with eight points.

Shadle Park 48, Rogers 12: Chelsea Chandler scored 14 points and Lindsey Niemeier 10 as the Highlanders (8-2) moved into a second-place tie with their win over the host Pirates (0-10).
