Auditions for Fox’s ‘Dance’ planned Monday

So, do you think you can dance?

Now is your chance to find out. The local Fox TV station, KAYU, will host auditions for the fifth season of the popular show “So You Think You Can Dance” on Monday at the Valley HUB.

Dancers ages 18 to 30 are invited to show their stuff. Dancers will be judged on overall performance, stage presence, difficulty of dance, technique and creativity. The top five will perform again for the judges, who will come from the local dance industry.

The winner will get a free trip to Seattle to perform in regional tryouts March 28. The winner won’t have to wait in line and is guaranteed an audition.

“You know, very few actually get through the system at all,” said KAYU’s special projects manager, Kent Adams. “They guarantee at the network level that you’ll be on the list. How can you turn down at least a paid trip to Seattle?”

The tryouts were scheduled on Martin Luther King Jr. Day deliberately, Adams said. “A lot of people are off that day and will probably be able to show up,” he said.

The Valley HUB, an indoor sports complex that has struggled to raise money since being reopened by the Spokane Valley Ministerial Association, is trying to get the word out about its facilities. “It’s a way to give them a little free exposure,” Adams said.

This will be the first local competition for the dance show, though KAYU did host a local tryout for “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” last year.
