Mead tops field in six-way meet

Shadle’s Norman wins all-around title

Taylor Gray won the balance beam Thursday night to help Mead to the team title during a six-way Greater Spokane League gymnastics meet at North Central.

Gray scored 9.35 on the beam on the way to 33.75 all-around points, good for third place. She was second in the floor exercise (9.1) and third in the vault (8.8).

Mead scored 159.65 points to hold off Shadle Park (151.25) and Central Valley (149.225). Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) placed fourth with 124.175 points, followed by the host Indians (121.75) and Rogers (121.1).

Shadle’s Alana Norman won the all-around with 34.65 points. She dominated the meet, winning the bars (8.2), floor (9.15) and vault (9.1).

Lakeside’s Anande Egland placed second in the all-around (34.1), including second-place finishes in the bars (7.6) and vault (8.85).

NC’s Christie Grorud (33.6) placed fourth in the all-around, followed by CV’s Emma Vidmar (32.9).

Wrestling

East Valley 49, Lewis and Clark 7: The visiting Knights (5-1) used three pins and two forfeits to power past the Tigers (1-4) in the Greater Spokane League. EV’s Gabe Rodriguez (135 pounds) defeated Austin Holzer 9-7 in overtime. At 189, EV state veteran Dakota Lawson earned a 12-0 major decision over Peter VanVoorhis. EV moved into a second-place tie with idle Central Valley, one match behind University (6-0).

North Central 72, Rogers 5: The visiting Indians (1-4) compiled 10 pins in a GSL win over the Pirates (0-6). NC’s Ben Carter (160) defeated Tyler Lehman 10-9 on a reversal with 20 seconds left.

Colville 40, Pullman 33: Brandon Hastings pinned Andy Bitz early in the third round at 145 to seal the visiting Indians’ (2-3) win over the Greyhounds (0-3) in the Great Northern League. Colville led 34-30 with two matches left, but Pullman’s Austin Zaring (140) defeated John Fowler 23-18 after trailing by more than 10 points, setting up the Hastings-Bitz match. Pullman heavyweight Ben Grimes upset Ian Nelson 4-2.

Riverside 39, Cheney 18: The visiting Rams (3-1) won every match from 140 to 215 to pull away from the Blackhawks (0-2) in a GNL meet. Riverside’s Justin Hodge (130) edged Logan Huckins 6-5. Rams brothers Jacob (160) and Nick (171) DesRoches secured back-to-back decisions.

Boys basketball

Post Falls 61, Sandpoint 41: Justin Carter scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the visiting Trojans’ rally past the Bulldogs (0-6, 0-3) in the Inland Empire League. Post Falls (9-1, 1-1) trailed 25-20 at halftime and took a 39-36 lead into the final quarter. Sandpoint’s Tanner French hit four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 17 points.

Priest River 65, Bonners Ferry 51: Eric Holbrook hit 11 of 12 free throws on the way to 25 points as the Spartans (7-0, 1-0) defeated the visiting Badgers (2-5, 0-1) in the Intermountain League. Jake Weimer added 21 points and 11 rebounds for Priest River. BF’s Dillon Deitz and Aaron Hoisington scored 11 points apiece.

Rosalia 43, Touchet 36: Jim Maley and Nathan Richards combined for 27 points as the Spartans (7-6) held off the visiting Indians in a non-leaguer. Richards shot 8 for 8 from the free-throw line in the second half. Touchet finished with 27 turnovers.

St. Maries 52, Potlatch 36: Aaron Corsi accounted for 17 points, 21 rebounds and six blocked shots in leading the Lumberjacks (7-0) past the visiting Loggers in a non-leaguer. St. Maries’ Zach Lehman added 16 points and seven assists.

Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy 42, Clark Fork 22: Bob Schrack finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds to guide the host Panthers (5-4) past the Wampus Cats in a non-leaguer. CdA Charter used a full-court press to build a 15-2 first-quarter lead. Clark Fork (1-8) lost its eighth consecutive game.

Girls basketball

Post Falls 53, Sandpoint 16: Jordan Schoening hit three 3-pointers on the way to 19 points as the visiting Trojans (12-4, 6-1) cruised past the Bulldogs (1-11, 0-7) in the Inland Empire League. Katelyn Loper added 12 points for the Trojans, who pulled within one-half game of idle Coeur d’Alene. Post Falls finished with a 27-17 rebounding edge. Sandpoint committed 32 turnovers.

Timberlake 46, St. Maries 33: Cassie Thompson scored 17 points to lift the host Tigers (9-3, 4-0) past the Lumberjacks (6-7, 3-2) in Intermountain League play at Spirit Lake. Timberlake’s Amanda Kirby hit 6 of 7 from the free-throw line down the stretch and finished with 10 points. Karly Truscott of St. Maries also scored 10 points.

Priest River 60, Kellogg 29: Taylor Stewart, Jamie Koch and Melissa Hopkins combined for 52 points to power the visiting Spartans (5-6, 3-1) past the Wildcats (2-9, 0-4) in IML play. Hopkins added 13 rebounds.

Touchet 45, Rosalia 43: Ashley Humbert scored 14 points and the Indians rallied for a non-league win by outscoring the host Spartans 31-16 in the second half. Sisters Katelyn and Briann Maley combined for 19 points and 15 rebounds for Rosalia (5-8).

Wallace 36, Kootenai 13: The visiting Miners (4-6, 3-1) defeated the Warriors (0-10, 0-3) in North Star League play at Harrison.
