On Wednesday, the teachers of the Mead School District invite the public to attend “Hoops for Hope V,” a basketball game definitely worth the money.

“Hoops” isn’t just another fundraiser. The ASB classes from Mt. Spokane High School and Mead High School have organized the 7:30 p.m. game, where faculty from Mt. Spokane, Mead, Mountainside Middle School and Northwood Middle School square off at Mt. Spokane for some good, clean, fun competition. And, after the sweat and sport, proceeds will benefit the Coaches vs. Cancer fund.

Jim Preston, assistant principal at Mt. Spokane, has been one of the organizers of the event for the last five years. “We have a pretty good crowd. The students have a lot of fun; we get very good student support,” he said.

In the past four years, the benefit game has raised more than $11,000 for the Coaches vs. Cancer organization. “It’s a cause that unfortunately has impacted all of our lives,” Preston said.

Admission is a $5 donation and raffle tickets will also be sold for $5. Items in the raffle include four tickets to the Gonzaga University vs. Pepperdine University game and four tickets to the Washington State University vs. Arizona State University game, provided by Avista Utilities, and an autographed basketball signed by the coaches involved in the Coaches vs. Cancer organization, including Gonzaga basketball coach Mark Few. The raffle drawing will be held during halftime at the Mt. Spokane vs. Mead basketball game on Thursday.

Shadle social planned

Shadle Park High School seniors are raising funds for their Senior All-Nighter. On Feb. 28, the senior parents are doing their part – and having a lot of fun for the great cause.

Tickets are currently on sale for “A DeVine Experience,” a Shadle Park Grad Night 2009 Adult Social. The evening affair includes wine tasting and a silent auction. The gala will take place at Assumption School, 3618 W. Indian Trail Road.

All proceeds will benefit the 2009 Shadle Senior All-Nighter.
