CV slips past Mt. Spokane
Central Valley moved into third place in the Greater Spokane League on Friday night, but just barely.
The Bears (11-4) slipped past upstart host Mt. Spokane 62-60 while Shadle Park (11-5) was losing by 16 to Lewis and Clark (15-0), which ran its winning streak to 48 games.
Not much separated the Bears and Wildcats (3-11) despite the disparity in their records. The victors made a 3-pointer with a minute left to break a tie and added a pair of free throws following a turnover to win.
CV led by four points after a quarter, and by one at halftime and after three periods.
Freshman Katie Estey made four 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 19 points, and her team needed every one. CV also converted 21 free throws, 10 more that the Wildcats, on 30 attempts.
Mt. Spokane’s Averi Hallman, Kaie Karisch and Sammie Peterson all scored in double figures during the upset bid.
LC 63, Shadle Park 47: Jeneva Anderson has continually played her best in the bigger games and the UW-bound Tiger did so at Shadle.
She scored a team-high 16 points, sharing game honors with Shadle’s Kendra Knutsen.
LC jumped to a 16-2 lead, forcing six turnovers in the first 4 minutes. Shadle closed to within seven, but the second half belonged to the Tigers, whose winning streak ranks No. 9 in state history for all divisions.
University 49, East Valley 45: In a night when perimeter shots kept rimming out of the basket, the visiting Titans (9-7) pulled away from the Knights (8-8) in the final quarter.
Ahead just 34-33 with 6 minutes to play, U-Hi’s Nyesha Joseph drove the key to score and Ellie Frame and Chenise Pakootas hit 3-pointers for a 42-36 lead with 3:20 remaining.
EV could get no closer than four points. Joseph scored a season-high 15 points, 10 in the second half, and had 12 rebounds. Freshman Alicia Christiansen had two 3-pointers in the second half and tied her career high of 10 points.
Ferris 53, North Central 52: Christie Bauer made a layin off an inbounds play with 5 seconds left to lift the Saxons (4-11) over the host Indians (1-14).
Alex Quann scored 16 points, her season high. Tara VanWeerdhuizen had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Indians.
