Bells get past RiverHawks 4-3

Mike Chiarelli’s bunt brought home Mark Purser (Mt. Spokane High) with the decisive run in the sixth inning Wednesday as the Bellingham Bells (13-9) took a 4-3 West Coast League seven-inning baseball victory over the Spokane RiverHawks in the first game of a doubleheader at Gonzaga University.

Spokane (9-14) scored two runs in the fifth, highlighted by Phil Johnson’s RBI double.

The final score of the second game was not available at press time.

Golf

Chris Williams of Moscow, David Fern of Spokane and University of Idaho sophomore Jarred Bossio all advanced to the round of 16 in match play at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship held at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash. Hank Frame of Spokane lost.

Williams’ victory came in just 12 holes, 7 and 6, and his 7-under par total was on pace to break the course record. Fern also cruised with a 6 and 4 victory.

In the women’s tourney at Arrowhead GC in Molalla, Ore., Idaho senior Amanda Jacobs lost in the round of 16 while Spokane’s Brittany Wilcox lost in the round of 32. In the Mid-Amateur championship, Julie Williams of Sandpoint lost in the round of 16.
