Regional roundup: Williams, Fern advance

Second-seeded Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, and David Fern of Spokane both won two matches Thursday to advance to today’s quarterfinals of the 108th Pacific Northwest Golf Association’s Men’s Amateur Championship at the Home Course in Dupont, Wash.

Williams defeated Cory Mehl of Seattle 5 and 3 in the round of 32 and former Seattle Mariners pitcher Erik Hanson of Kirkwood, Wash., 5 and 4 in the round of 16.

Fern, the 2004 champion who is seeded 30th, defeated Sam Cyr of Makawao, Hawaii, 1-up in the round of 32 and Gerrit Chambers of Brush Prairie, Wash., 2 and 1 in the round of 16.

Williams and Fern would meet in today’s semifinals if both win their quarterfinals.

Jarred Bossio of Olympia, who will be a sophomore this fall at the University of Idaho, lost 3 and 2 in the round of 32 to Brandon Harkins of Walnut Creek, Calif.

In the 108th PNGA Women’s Amateur Championship at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla, Ore., Dottie Ardina of Sun City, Calif., and Kendra Little of Eugene, Ore., won semifinals and will compete in today’s 36-hole final.

In the round of 16, Ardina defeated Amanda Jacobs, who will be a senior this fall at Idaho, 2-up.

Baseball

Brian Winston went 3 for 4 and Matt Orloff drove in two runs as the Spokane RiverHawks (11-14) defeated the Bellingham Bells 5-2 to complete a three-game West Coast League series at Gonzaga’s Patterson Field.

Spokane won the series 2-1, including a 7-5 win over the Bells (13-11) during the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Nik Balog and Maverick Olivares added two hits apiece as the RiverHawks piled up 13 hits off four Bellingham pitchers in Thursday’s game.

Mike Richard (3-2) earned the win, allowing four hits and two earned runs in 52/3 innings.

Patrick Claussen hit a homer for the Bells.

Spokane begins a three-game series against Kitsap tonight at Avista Stadium.
