Meling on top of matters at rodeo

Bull rider Joe Meling of Baker City, Ore., who leads the Columbia River Circuit, was tops at the Cheney Rodeo on the opening night with a score of 79 on Friday.

Tyler Smith of Lewiston and Andy Carlson of Stanfield, Ore., lead the wait in team roping at 6.9 seconds.

Tonight’s action begins at 8 at the Bi-Mart Arena.

Baseball

The Kitsap BlueJackets scored four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game and went on to defeat the Spokane RiverHawks 5-4 in 12 innings in a West Coast League game played at Avista Stadium.

Tyler Olson pitched eight shutout innings before walking his sixth and seventh batters of the night to open the ninth. A bases-loaded walk, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly off two relievers tied the game. Kitsap (11-15) scored the winning run off loser Paul Sewald on a hit batter, walk, single and sacrifice fly.

Brian Winston went 4 for 4 for the RiverHawks (10-14).

Soccer

Ryan Youngblood scored twice and the Portland Timbers U23 squad defeated the Spokane Spiders 4-1 in a Premier Development League match at Greyhound Park in Post Falls.

Zachary Smith had the Spiders’ lone goal. It came at the 35th minute off a corner kick. That tied the game, but two minutes later Masaki Hemmi scored for a 2-1 lead for the Timbers (9-3-2). The Spiders are 3-12-0.

Golf

Chris Williams of Moscow and David Fern of Spokane lost in the semifinals at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship played on The Home Course in Dupont, Wash.

Williams lost to Josh Anderson of Murrieta, Calif., 2 and 1. Anderson faces Tim Matthews of Redmond, Wash., today in a 36-hole finale.

Fern fell to Darren Wallace of Langley, B.C., 2 and 1. Wallace then lost to Anderson on the 19th hole.

Philippine national team member Dottie Ardina, 15, who lives in Sun City, Calif., won the women’s championship at Arrowhead GC in Molalla, Ore., 5 and 4 over Kendra Little of Eugene, Ore.
