Taylor top seed

Frame in match play at Publinx

NORMAN, Okla. – Canadian Nick Taylor, who golfs for the University of Washington, earned the top seed in qualifying at the at the U.S. Amateur Public Links.

Taylor, who was the low amateur at last month’s U.S. Open, shot a 1-under 70 on Tuesday and maintained first place in qualifying on the Jimmie Austin Golf Course on the University of Oklahoma campus. He shot a 66 in the first round of stroke-play.

Jace Long of Dixon, Mo., Rickie Fowler of Murietta, Calif., and Nick Geyer of Albuquerque, N.M., all tied for second, four shots back.

Hank Frame of Spokane tied for 23rd and qualified for match play after shooting a 6-over-par 77 in the second round. He carded a 69 in the first round.

Defending champion Jack Newman of Des Moines, Iowa, missed the cut by one stroke after finishing at 8-over 150.

A total of 64 golfers qualified for match play.
