Garden to be dedicated Tuesday

EAST CENTRAL – A dedication ceremony for the new East Central Community Garden will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the corner of South Ralph Street and East Hartson Avenue.

East Central neighbors can apply for 10-foot-by-10-foot plots within the garden to grow their own produce. The neighbors can keep whatever they grow in their section, but they are encouraged to share their harvest by planting a row for the hungry or give away what they don’t eat.

A second garden on vacant Water Department land is being developed in Hillyard and is expected to be dedicated later this summer. Additional sites also are being considered for gardens that would be developed in 2010.

Car seat safety patrols planned

SPOKANE COUNTY – A grant through the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission and the Spokane County Health District will have extra sheriff’s deputies on the lookout for child safety-restraint violations through the end of July.

Motor vehicle collisions are one of the greatest causes of injury and death to children in Washington State, and the grant-funded safety emphasis is one effort to reduce those numbers.

Fines for child safety restraint violations are $124. Teams comprised of four deputies each will work the following locations in Spokane County through July 31.

Sheriff’s deputies will patrol Boulder Beach on Upriver Drive on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Division Street and Francis Avenue on July 24, from 1 to 6 p.m.; and Harvard Road and Wellesley Ave. on July 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
