Hughes named associate A.D.

Marc Hughes, head women’s golf coach at Eastern Washington University for the last 11 years, has been named the school’s associate director of athletics for development and the director of golf.

Hughes will oversee EWU’s golf program and be responsible for fundraising efforts and strategic planning for the athletics department.

Hughes was selected Big Sky Conference coach of the year for 2007-08. The school will begin an immediate search for a new golf coach.

•The University of Idaho women received the National Golf Coaches Association All-Scholar Team GPA Award for 2008-09.

Idaho’s seven team members had an average GPA of 3.78. The team’s lone local player is Gracie Schory, a redshirt freshman from Chewelah High.

Basketball

Cheney point guard Michael Sprenger has committed to play basketball at Walla Walla University, coach Gerry Larson announced.

The 6-foot, 170-pounder averaged 12 points per game while leading the Blackhawks to seventh place at the State 2A championships for 2008-09.

Cross country

West Valley’s Krystal Hughes has signed to attend Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., and compete for the Wolves.

Hughes placed in the top 20 at three state cross country championships.

She finished third at state during her junior season.

Hughes also earned a top-10 finish in the 3,200-meter run at last spring’s state track and field championships.

Soccer

Washington State University’s Kiersten Dallstream and Ali Fenter participated with United States national teams earlier this year.

Dallstream, a forward who will be a senior this fall, competed with the Americans’ U23 team in England earlier this month.

Fenter, a defender from Shadle Park High named to the Pacific-10 Conference Freshman team last season, earlier participated in the U.S. U20 camp.

Caitlin Bresnahan and Ashley Loughmiller, incoming freshman midfielders at WSU, will play in the U.S. Youth Soccer U18 National Championship in Lancaster, Mass.

Softball

North Idaho College pitcher Karri Johnson, a two-year starter, has signed to play for Southern Oregon University in Ashland.

Johnson, from Sands Secondary High in Delta, British Columbia, helped lead the Cardinals to a third-place finish in the Scenic West Athletic Conference last season. She had 35 wins and 278 strikeouts during her NIC career.

Volleyball

Gonzaga University head coach Dave Gantt announced the addition of Allen Allen as volunteer assistant coach.

Allen, a premier player at the University of Hawaii, was a mainstay with the U.S. National Team and played professionally in the United States and Europe.

Allen’s wife Melissa is head girls basketball coach at Mt. Spokane High.

•Spokane native Brandon Louden, a member of the club volleyball team at the University of Idaho, is participating this summer in the Athletes in Action tour of Russia.

The team will play various Russian teams during its three-week stay.
