Local Legion teams take lumps

Local teams have no room for error left at the American Legion baseball AA State Tournament at University and Cheney high schools.

All four local entrants lost their openers Saturday at the double-elimination tournament.

At U-Hi, Colton Watson led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a homer as the Chehalis Sobe Toyota Lizards defeated Mt. Spokane 5-4. For Mt. Spokane, Carson Blumenthal struck out nine in seven innings and Alex Allard had an RBI single in the fifth for a 4-3 lead.

The host Kimmel Athletic Titans lost 14-2 to the Yakima Valley Peppers in five innings. DJ Smith had three RBIs, including a two-run single during a seven-run third. U-Hi’s Justin Liu hit a two-run homer in the first.

At Cheney High, Lakeside Skyline defeated the Ferris Saxons 7-1 and the Kennewick Junior Bandits topped the host Cheney Summer Hawks 7-0.

Today’s loser-out schedule at U-Hi: Lakeside Newport vs. Mt. Spokane at 9 a.m. and Capital Baseball Club vs. the host Titans at 11:30.

The loser-out games at Cheney High: Kennewick Dusters vs. Ferris at 9 a.m. and North Kitsap Bodylink vs. Cheney at 11:30.

•The Twin City Titans scored seven unearned runs after two outs in the seventh to defeat the Spokane Blue Devils to open the American Legion AAA State Tournament at Tacoma’s Heidelberg Park. The Blue Devils play the Yakima Beetles this morning in a loser-out game.

•Kyle Anderson (4-1) allowed one earned run in five innings and the Spokane RiverHawks (17-19) used a five-run first to cruise past the Moses Lake Pirates 6-1 in West Coast League play at Avista Stadium.

Jason Brunansky and Dylan Gavin had RBI hits in the first for Spokane. Brent Trask went 4 for 4 and scored for the Pirates (6-31).

Volleyball

The U.S. Women’s Junior National Team, with Mead’s Alexis Olgard on the roster, placed 12th at the FIVB World Championships in Tijuana, Mexico, after being swept by the Czech Republic. Olgard had 11 kills Friday as the Americans lost to China 3-0.

Northwest League baseball

The Spokane Indians’ game at Vancouver, British Columbia, was suspended by rain in the second inning. The teams will play a doubleheader today.
