Rent-to-own firm accused of bullying

Associated Press

SEATTLE — A major rent-to-own company has been accused of bullying and illegal collection practices in Washington state.

The claims were filed late last week by Washington state Attorney General Rob McKenna in King County Superior Court against Rent-A-Center of Plano, Texas.

McKenna also filed complaints signed by 10 individuals claiming they were abused by Rent-A-Center collectors. Their complaints include trying to break down a door, threats against their children, profanity in collection calls and giving personal financial information to neighbors.

Rent-A-Center spokesman Xavier Dominicis (dom-i-NEE’-sees) says the company takes every complaint seriously, but he maintains that the attorney general’s claims are “patently false.”
