EWU event aids Cheney Food Bank

CHENEY – Eastern Washington University will hold its second annual Community Food Drive, Monday through Aug. 21.

University departments will form teams to collect the most food and compete for prizes.

Nadine Arévalo, wife of EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo, is coordinating this event to remind the community that the holidays are not the only time of year when food donations are needed.

Last year, the food drive collected about 6 tons of food and $5,000 in cash. Proceeds benefit the Cheney Food Bank.

Eating at Applebee’s helps homeless

SPOKANE COUNTY/COEUR D’ALENE – Each Sunday in August, Applebee’s on the South Hill, Spokane Valley, Northpointe and Coeur d’Alene will be accepting Dining to Donate coupons.

The coupons will donate 10 percent of the bill to Interfaith Hospitality of Spokane. The organization provides shelter, meals, housing and job placement support to the homeless and those in need in the area.

Center hosting art camps for children

CLIFF/CANNON – The Corbin Art Center, 507 W. Seventh Ave., will host a series of fine arts and crafts camps for children. All camps start Monday and run through Aug. 7.

Travel ’Round the World Camp and From Page to Stage Drama Camp, for ages 6-11, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children are asked to bring a lunch. Cost is $104 for each camp.

Fairytale Theater Camp, for ages 3-5, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children are asked to bring a snack and a beverage. Cost is $52.

Storybook Theater Camp, for ages 3-5, 12:30 to 3 p.m. Children are asked to bring a snack and a beverage. Cost is $52.

Trips offer outdoor adventure

SPOKANE – Spokane Parks and Recreation Department is offering tours and trips in August. The outdoor trips are for people 8 and older.

•A Kayak and Wine Tour, for ages 21 and older, is next Thursday, from 6 to 9 p.m. Paddle on Boulder Beach on the Spokane River and go wine tasting at a local winery. Cost is $27 per person.

•On Aug. 9, participants ages 10 and older can enjoy a Clark Fork River Raft Trip, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The trip includes a mix of class III-plus rapids and calm stretches for swimming and time to relax on the Clark Fork River in Montana. The cost is $74 per person. Lunch is included.

•From Aug. 10 to Aug. 24, people ages 16 and older can take Nordic Walking for Fun. The three-week trek will be held on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Interested walkers will experience an efficient and aerobic workout and will meet in Manito Park. Cost is $52. Poles are provided.

•Those 18 and older can have an evening out with Kayak and Klink’s by the Lake on Aug. 13, from 4 to 8 p.m. Paddle Williams Lake, and then enjoy dinner at Klink’s on the Lake. Cost is $51 per person.

•A Kayak Tour at Badger Lake by Moonlight will be Aug. 14, from 7 to 11 p.m., and is for participants age 18 and older. Cost is $25 per person or $22 per person for REI members.

•Canoe Family Fun will be Aug. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. The family event is for those age 8 and older. Cost is $27 for two people and $17 for each additional person. For REI members the cost is $23 for two people and $13 for each additional person.

•On Aug. 15, learn how to use a telescope and star chart to observe constellations at Astronomy Basics, from 7 to 11 p.m., at the Bowl and Pitcher Overlook in Riverside State Park. The event is for people age 8 and older and is will be guided by the Spokane Astronomical Society. Cost is $17 for adults and $11 for ages 16 and under.

Theater group offers outdoor show

NEVADA/LIDGERWOOD – The Way Off-Broadway Theatre Group will perform Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” Aug. 8 and 9 and Aug. 15 and 16 on the grass at Gonzaga Preparatory School, 1224 E. Euclid Ave. All shows will be performed at 2 p.m.

The family-friendly production will be performed by actors from Gonzaga University, under the direction of the Rev. Kevin Connell.

Grant will help center update furnace

FAIRFIELD – The Inland Northwest Community Foundation recently awarded the Fairfield Community Center, 304 E. Main St., with a grant that allowed them to install a new heating system. The propane-fired furnace is energy efficient and allows precise floor-by-floor temperature control.

The Community Center is a gathering place for Fairfield, the rural community and other small Palouse-area towns. The building’s furnace was 70 years old.

The foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations in order to enrich education, arts and culture, provide critical human services, and more.
