EWU event benefits Cheney Food Bank
CHENEY – Eastern Washington University will hold its second annual Community Food Drive, Monday through Aug. 21.
University departments will form teams to collect the most food and compete for prizes.
Nadine Arévalo, wife of EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo, is coordinating this event to remind the community that the holidays are not the only time of year when food donations are needed.
Last year, the food drive collected about 6 tons of food and $5,000 in cash. Proceeds benefit the Cheney Food Bank.

Eating at Applebee’s helps the homeless
SPOKANE COUNTY/COEUR D’ALENE – Each Sunday in August, Applebee’s on the South Hill, Spokane Valley, Northpointe and Coeur d’Alene will be accepting Dining to Donate coupons.
The coupons will donate 10 percent of the bill to Interfaith Hospitality of Spokane. The organization provides shelter, meals, housing and job placement support to the homeless and those in need in the area.

Center hosting art camps for children
CLIFF/CANNON – The Corbin Art Center, 507 W. Seventh Ave., will host a series of fine arts and crafts camps for children. All camps start Monday and run through Aug. 7.
Travel ’Round the World Camp and From Page to Stage Drama Camp, for ages 6-11, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children are asked to bring a lunch. Cost is $104 for each camp.
Fairytale Theater Camp, for ages 3-5, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children are asked to bring a snack and a beverage. Cost is $52.
Storybook Theater Camp, for ages 3-5, 12:30 to 3 p.m. Children are asked to bring a snack and a beverage. Cost is $52.

Grant will help center update furnace
FAIRFIELD – The Inland Northwest Community Foundation recently awarded the Fairfield Community Center, 304 E. Main St., with a grant that allowed them to install a new heating system. The propane-fired furnace is energy efficient and allows precise floor-by-floor temperature control.
The Community Center is a gathering place for Fairfield, the rural community and other small Palouse-area towns. The building’s furnace was 70 years old.
The foundation awards grants to nonprofit organizations in order to enrich education, arts and culture, provide critical human services, and more.

Theater group giving outdoor performance
NEVADA/ LIDGERWOOD – The Way Off-Broadway Theatre Group will perform Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” Aug. 8 and 9 and Aug. 15 and 16 on the grass at Gonzaga Preparatory School, 1224 E. Euclid Ave. All shows will be performed at 2 p.m.
The family-friendly production will be performed by actors from Gonzaga University, under the direction of the Rev. Kevin Connell.
