Kennewick wins state tournament

Most Valuable Player Brock Marston went 3 for 5 with three runs batted in Thursday as the Kennewick Bandits defeated Chehalis 9-6 to win the AA American Legion State Tournament at University High School.

The Bandits’ Spencer O’Neill added three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the first inning.

The Bandits advance to the regional tournament, Aug. 8-13 at Kearns, Utah.

•Cody Ryckman’s one-out RBI single in the ninth gave the Spokane RiverHawks (18-22) an 11-10 win over the visiting Wenatchee AppleSox in West Coast League play at Gonzaga University’s Patterson Baseball Complex.

Conor Moore went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for Spokane.

Wenatchee tied the game at 10 with a four-run ninth, highlighted by Cody Keefer’s pinch-hit, two-run double.

Wenatchee (26-13) has all but wrapped up the East Division, but Spokane could meet the AppleSox in the divisional playoffs by holding off Kelowna for second place. The teams begin a four-game series tonight at GU.

Golf

Clarkston’s Michael Baldeck and Kellogg’s Kaceelyn Pouttu are in third place after two rounds of the 33rd Washington Junior Golf Association State Championship at Bellevue, Wash.

Baldeck, in the boys 12-13 division, fired a 2-over-par 74 and is at 3-over 147, five shots off the pace. Pouttu followed up Wednesday’s 76 with a 78 and is eight shots off the pace among girls 12-13. Colbert’s Sierra Bezdicek is in fourth place at 156, two shots behind Pouttu.

Other top efforts for area golfers: Tyler Carlson, boys 14-15, tied for fifth at 148; and Colbert’s Savana Bezdicek, girls 14-15, tied for fifth at 161.

The tourney ends today at Glendale Golf Club.

•Clarkston’s Joel Dahmen shot a 4-under 68 and moved into a tie for 12th place after three rounds of the 43rd Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at The Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.

Dahmen stands at 6-under 210, seven shots behind Chan Kim of Chandler, Ariz., and Zack Sucher of Mobile, Ala.

•Spokane’s Nick Grigsby shot a 140 at The Ranch Club in Missoula earlier this week to qualify for the Aug. 24-27 U.S. Amateur at the Southern Hills course in Tulsa, Okla.
