Named San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg is among five finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation’s top amateur baseball player. North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, Arizona State pitcher Mike Leake, Alabama outfielder Kent Matthes and Kansas State pitcher A.J. Morris joined Strasburg as finalists announced by USA Baseball on Tuesday.

Retired Chicago Bulls assistant Del Harris, 71, has retired after a 33-year career in the NBA in which he was coach of the year in 1995 with the Los Angeles Lakers. Harris spent 12 seasons as a head coach with three teams. In addition to the Lakers, he coached Milwaukee and Houston. He took the Rockets to the NBA finals in 1981.

Relocated NASCAR moved Jeremy Mayfield’s challenge of his indefinite suspension to federal court, a move that could keep the driver out of his car another week. The notification came a day before a North Carolina Superior Court was scheduled to hear arguments pertaining to Mayfield’s suspension for failing a random drug test.

Requested A judge said he’ll move quickly and carefully to resolve a lawsuit by Minnesota Vikings Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, who are fighting their four-game suspensions for their use of a banned substance. With the legal fight moving from federal court to state court, Hennepin (Minn.) County District Judge Gary Larson asked for and got assurances from NFL attorneys that no immediate action will be taken against the Williamses ahead of the season.

Transferring Boston College quarterback Dominique Davis is transferring after his academic suspension. The school said he has not decided where he will go. The Eagles are coming off a 9-5 season and Davis was projected to start this fall.

•Former Oregon State walk-on quarterback Brennan Sim has transferred to South Alabama. Sim didn’t see action for the Beavers the past two seasons after a redshirt year.

Returned Former Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry, who was arrested in Florida two weeks ago for allegedly violating bond conditions on a federal drug conviction, has been returned to Montana. Henry is being held at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility.
