The Slice: Let the celebration begin

Remember, the 12 Days of Father’s Day begin Wednesday.

Since Father’s Day was invented here, Spokane dads are entitled to an extended version.

Spokane’s most common sunburn excuse: A) “Didn’t think I was out that long.” B) “I was drunk.” C) “I didn’t think it happened in nice neighborhoods.” D) “Liberals.” E) Other.

Five for Friday: 1. This is D-Day Eve. 2. Is the five-minute life-story montage in “Up” as great as the critics say? 3. The winner of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes isn’t likely to break Secretariat’s race record. 4. Name three members of the version of the Beach Boys appearing at the Spokane County Interstate Fair. 5. SpokeFest is Sept. 13 this year. Go to www.spokefest.org.

Feedback: “What ever possessed the paper to change your picture? Because it’s not an improvement. You looked kind of happier in the other one and it was clearer. And this one makes you look old and crotchety and even a little sinister. I protest.” — phone message from a woman who did not leave her name

Warm-up question: Do you hurt yourself in the same way over and over? (You know, burn your hand in the same place while cooking, stub your toe on the same table leg, repeatedly smack into a cupboard door with your forehead.)

Today’s Slice question: A friend shared a snapshot of a sign in Soap Lake outside Van’s Coffee & More. According to the sign, the “& More” includes wine, beer, espresso, gourmet sandwiches, WiFi, furniture and tanning. Everything, seemingly, except guns and bait.

What’s your favorite example of an Inland Northwest business that is similarly into diversification?
