Volunteers improve trails

National Trails Day draws help for several projects

A new trail segment in the Iller Creek Conservation Futures Area west of Dishman-Mica Road will be open to hikers and bikers starting Sunday, thanks to many hours of work from volunteers. The effort was one of many work parties around the Inland Northwest coinciding with National Trails Day. Backcountry Horsemen were working on trails at the Antoine Peak Conservation Futures area and members of the Friends of Mount Spokane State Park were flagging proposed new trail segments for construction that could start later this summer. They also checked out a site for a new year-round yurt that could be installed for overnight use in the park next year. A group assisted by REI spent Saturday morning cleaning up a portion of the Fish Lake rail trail.
