Kelowna cruises past Spokane

Chris O’Neil scattered 10 hits over seven innings to lead the Kelowna Falcons to a 9-4 victory over the Spokane RiverHawks in West Coast League play Saturday at Avista Stadium.

O’Neil allowed three runs – two earned – to help Kelowna even the season-opening three-game series at a game apiece. He struck out three and walked one.

Reese Wade had four of the Falcons’ 14 hits. Louie Templeton drove in three runs with a pair of doubles for Kelowna, while Brent Hottman and Ryan Jenkins put together 3-for-4 efforts at the plate.

Mike Richard’s first start of the season for Spokane was a rough one. He allowed four runs – all earned – on four hits and seven walks in four innings. Garrett Luippold allowed seven hits and a walk in 32/3 innings of relief. Kyle Lawton went the final 21/3 innings – allowing three runs on three hits and a walk.

Sean Winston had three of the RiverHawks’ 14 hits. Jake Williams, Phil Johnson, Jake Partridge and Ian Atkinson each had two hits.

The Falcons took control of the game with a four-run fourth inning, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead.

The final game of the three-game series is tonight at 5:05 at Avista.

Men’s rowing

The Washington Huskies won gold medals in four of five races – including all 8-man races – to win the 107th IRA Championships Regatta on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.

The Huskies won the Jim Ten Eyck team trophy for the third straight year.

Washington won the varsity 8, second varsity 8, freshman 8 and open 4 races and finished second in the varsity 4.

The Gonzaga men placed fifth in the varsity 8 third-level final. The Bulldogs finished 17th in the nation.
