Man arrested for Obama threat
Salt Lake City – Authorities have arrested a man who allegedly told bank tellers while cleaning out his savings account in Utah that he was on a mission to kill President Barack Obama.
The Secret Service said Daniel James Murray, 36, was arrested Friday outside a casino in Laughlin, Nev., a gambling town 100 miles from Las Vegas on the Nevada-Arizona line.
He was charged Thursday in Salt Lake City with a federal count of conveying threats while talking to tellers last month at Zions First National Bank in St. George, Utah.
Murray was described by his father and former neighbors in Rexford, N.Y., as troubled but not dangerous, known for strolling down a street wearing a cape while talking to himself.
US Airways pilot joins D-Day event
Denison, Texas – In a town that’s no stranger to heroes, one stood out Saturday.
US Airways Capt. Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III returned to his hometown of Denison, Texas, to help pay tribute to military veterans on the 65th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. Denison also was the birthplace of the man who led the invasion, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Gov. Rick Perry presented Sullenberger with a legislative resolution praising his safe landing of a US Airways jet on the Hudson River on Jan. 15, saving all aboard.
A crowd of flag-waving, sign-holding North Texans staked out sidewalk space early Saturday to get a good glimpse of the 57-year-old pilot and Air Force veteran in a parade down Main Street.
“It makes me proud and makes me feel good to know that somebody from such a small town can do something so great and save a lot of lives,” said Helen Moore, a drum major in the high school band.
Mystery object was model rocket
Liberty, Texas – Investigators in Texas say a flying object that narrowly missed a Continental Express plane last month may have been a large model rocket.
The jet’s pilot and co-pilot spotted the object and a long white vapor trail shortly after they took off from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on May 29. The plane was bound for Greenville, S.C.
Pilots spotted the object at roughly 16,000 feet. It was about 5 feet to 7 feet long.
