Dad, son launch fishing blitz

OUTDO – This is no ordinary high school graduation road trip.

On Saturday, a father and son from Warrenton, Va., will embark on a nationwide expedition to fish 50 trophy waters in 50 states in 50 days.

Jeff Turner and his son, Taylor, 17, plan to cover 15,000 overland miles in a motorhome plus 6,000 miles by air to Alaska and Hawaii. The schedule includes fishing in 28 rivers, 19 lakes and three saltwater locations.

Sprinting through the Inland Northwest, they plan to wet a line in Idaho’s Henry’s Fork and Montana’s Yellowstone before pursuing Lewis River steelhead in Washington and Columbia River sturgeon from Oregon.

The pair has secured several sponsors and the help of fishing guides from coast to coast.

Western schools need lessons

OUTCAST – Southern schools dominated the top 50 spots in the recent weeklong BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship.

Murray State (Kentucky) slipped past second place University of North Texas and 140 teams from 70 other schools to take the crown at Lake Lewisville, Tex.

Three teams were entered from Western schools. Arizona State placed 61st. University of Oregon and Nevada-Reno were among 14 teams that got skunked.
