In brief: CdA school district to call emergency

The Coeur d’Alene School District is expected to declare a financial emergency today during a special meeting with the district’s board of trustees.

A law passed by the Idaho Legislature allows school districts to reopen teacher contracts to negotiate adjustments in pay, hours or contract length under such emergencies.

District spokeswoman Janet Feiler said the announcement is the result of a tentative agreement between the district and the Coeur d’Alene Education Association.

“The declaration is being done bilaterally and collaboratively between those two teams,” Feiler said. “When the decision is ratified by a vote of the union, then the details will be revealed.”

About a dozen Idaho school districts have declared financial emergencies.

Man’s body found after fall into river

The body of a Kootenai County man missing since he fell into the Priest River last month was recovered Monday at the Albeni Falls Dam.

Searchers suspended the hunt for Donald R. Maskell, 43, on Saturday. They presumed he drowned after falling off a log that angled into the river while camping on private property about four miles north of the confluence with the Pend Oreille River on May 22.

Army Corps of Engineers employees at the dam, about four miles west of Priest River on the Pend Oreille River, found the body, according to the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives will investigate the cause of death, although it is presumed accidental, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
