Greenacres, Evergreen win titles

Records were set and Greenacres and Evergreen divided up titles during the Spokane Valley Middle School all-league track meets.

Greenacres was undefeated in Class A boys and girls competitions to finish ahead of Evergreen. Evergreen won both Class B boys and girls to finish ahead of the Bruins.

Records set included the Class A boys 400 relay, 47.24 seconds by Greenacres sprinters Grayson Sikes, Brandon McClung, Mitchell Sanders and Michael Butler. Sanders also won the 65-meter hurdles and 100 dash. Sykes won the 200, Butler the 800 and McClung the 400.

In Class B, Alan Chamberlain of Greenacres set an open 400 record of 57.3. Chamberlain also won the high jump. North Pines’ Elijah Kilborn was a four-event winner in the 100, 200, hurdles and long jump. Horizon’s Danny Brunner won both 800 and 1,600.

Skye Sanders of Greenacres set girls Class A record in the 1,600, timing 5 minutes, 29.56 seconds. She also won the 400 and teamed with Bruins teammates Beth Hotchkiss, Meaghan Schmidt and Rachel Deno to win the 1,600 relay. Hotchkiss, Savannah Hoekstra, Mariah Cunningham and Shannon Moore set a 400 relay record of 52.87. Evergreen’s Michelle Nemeth won the 100, 200 and long jump.

In Class B, Hannah Holm from Bowdish set 200 and 400 records of 26.59 and 1:00.0. She also won the 65 hurdles. Paige Gallaway of Evergreen won the 100 and shot put and was second to Holm in the 200 and 400.

Women’s golf

Liberty Lake Nine Hole: The Ladies Club, playing at Trailhead, conducted two weeks of President’s Cup competition. In first flight, Karen Strauss shot low gross scores of 46 and 41. Audrey Vanos with 37 and Nancy Lampe with 39 were net winners.

In second flight, Joanne Ruddell with 50, Kathy Camyn and Lorraine Martin with 56 had low gross scores. Net leaders were Bette Divine, Emma Long, Wilma Capaul and Martin with 42s the first week, Shirley Byers and Ruddell with 40 the next.

Third flight low gross winners were Pat Reiter and Shirley Byus with 65, Polly Soderquist with 54. Net leaders were Lu Benjamin with 45 and Linda Barry with 22.

Trailhead at Liberty Lake: There are two weeks of competition to report. On May 27, Betty Grassl shot 52 for low gross score of the field. June 3, Sharron Collins shot 47.

Other leaders were Iness Walth, Joy Russell and Gail Peters with 53 the first week. Peters improved to 49 the second during B flight play. In C flight, Tammy Whitbeck and Judy Hander shot 60, Bev Johnson 59. Nancy Ripplinger had a 60 in no-handicap.

Net winners in A were Joyce Jacobs with 39 and 34, Dee Elder in B with 37 and 33. In C, Peg Nadvornick, Marilyn Collins and Penny Jones netted 40 the first week, Hander had 37 the second.

MeadowWood Women’s Club: During weekly competition, women counted the two best balls of each foursome. The team of Carol Schultz, Sue Meyers, Marlene Travaskis and Honey Conlon (in a blind draw) finished first with 130. Conlon, Linda Strom, Ann Eure and Else Metting shared second. They and the team of Marilyn McCanna, Maggie Steffy, Sandy McLaughlin and MaryAnn Wilharm finished with 131.

Painted Hills Ladies League: Medal play saw Sue Greany shot 49 in A flight to lead all golfers. Gloria Knauss had 52 in B, Pat Gore 57 in C, Eleanore Badinger 65 in D and Naomi Chester 59 in no handicap.

Net leaders were Joyce Jacobs with 37 in A, Emma Long with 34 in B, Dorothy Rausch with 34 in C and Cleo Workland with 40 in D.

Painted Hills Executive League: During best ball competition, the team of Sandy Nowaski, Kristi La Croix, Caroline Wyatt and Merilee Codd finished with a low gross 40. Gail Bailey, Liz Grafos and Mary Hager had net 38.

A flight winner was Caroline Wyatt with 41, while Mary Ellen Wall and Bailey netted 33s. Lynn Knight won B with 49 and Jean Jones netted 32. There was a three-way tie in C among Kathleen Burns, December Johnson and Hager with 60. Nowaski netted 38. No handicap winner was Kristin Watts with 49.
