Hired The Dallas Stars hired Marc Crawford as their new coach, bringing in a well-traveled NHL veteran to replace the fired Dave Tippett. Crawford has a 470-361-156 record in 13 seasons as coach of the Quebec Nordiques/ Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings.

Apologizes Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose said he used “extremely poor judgment” in posing for a photo flashing a gang sign. The NBA’s Rookie of the Year said the photo circulating on the Internet was taken at a party he went to while at the University of Memphis.

Attacked Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy was attacked and hit in the right knee with a stick or club in prison by a fellow inmate who claimed he had ties to the New York mob, a spokesman for Donaghy said. Donaghy, who pleaded guilty in New York to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commence, is serving a 15-month sentence.

Agrees The Houston Texans have reportedly agreed to a deal with quarterback Rex Grossman.

Pleads Former NFL linebacker Eric Naposki has pleaded not guilty to killing wealthy Southern California businessman William Francis McLaughlin 14 years ago.

Suspended The crew chief for Nationwide Series driver Brendan Gaughan, Bryan Berry, was suspended indefinitely for using a racial slur about rival driver Marc Davis, who is black.

Sues The former car chief of Carl Edwards sued Roush Fenway Racing, accusing the organization of firing him shortly after his suicide attempt. Jason Myers said his dismissal in February violated the Family Medical Leave Act.

Sentenced The father of tennis player Jelena Dokic, Damir Dokic, was sentenced in Serbia to 15 months in jail on charges that he threatened the Australian ambassador to Serbia.

Dies The Cleveland Indians announced that Woodie Held, who played 14 years in the majors died. He was 77. He died in Dubois, Wyo., after a long bout with cancer. Held played for seven A.L. teams. Held hit .240 with 179 homers and 559 RBIs in 1,390 games. He also played all three outfield positions, second base and third from 1954 through 1969.
