Barley recipe contest deadline Friday

The Palouse Chamber of Commerce is on the hunt for recipes using pearled barley.

Send an original recipe to the National Barley Cook-Off by Friday for a chance to win up to $175. Palouse Grain Growers Inc., which pearls barley grown locally by its co-op members, is providing prize money for the contest.

The top three recipes will receive $75, $50 and $25 cash prizes. These three recipes, plus two honorable mention recipes of the judges’ choice, will be prepared in large quantity for public sampling during the Palouse, Wash., annual town celebration Sept. 19. The winner of the People’s Choice will receive an additional $100 cash prize.

Recipes must use an easily visible amount of pearled barley and the best 30 recipes will be prepared by local cooks for evaluation by judges, who will consider ease of preparation, availability of ingredients and cost, in addition to taste.

Entries must be typed and can be e-mailed to grain@palouse.com or mailed to Palouse Grain Growers Inc., Box 118, Palouse, WA 99161. Please include complete name and mailing address.

For complete rules or more information, contact grain@palouse.com or call Bruce Baldwin (509) 878-1621 or Janet Barstow (509) 878-1742.
