Elk festival will feature food, fun
The 33rd Elk Pioneer Days – a three-day celebration of arts, crafts, games, food, music and entertainment – begins Friday.
Elk’s biggest annual festival always takes place on Father’s Day weekend. Most of the weekend activities will take place at Elk Community Park, though activities also are scheduled at the town’s fire station and VFW post. Admission is free.
Friday
Elk Park: Vendors will be open from 4 to 6 p.m. The Family Dollar Dance will take place from 5 to 9 p.m., and the band Yellow Dog will play from 7 to 9 p.m. The dance costs $1 a person or 50 cents with a nonperishable food item for the Elk VFW’s food bank. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)
VFW post: Live music with Greg Jordan & Friends from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Saturday
Fire station: The Firefighters’ Breakfast runs from 7 to 10 a.m. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, milk and juice will be on the menu. The requested donation is $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12; breakfast for a family of two adults and two children costs $18. Part of the proceeds will go to the Firefighters’ Scholarship Fund.
Parade through downtown Elk: Sign in between 8 and 9 a.m. (39513 Elk-Chattaroy Road); parade starts at 10 a.m. and winds through Elk to the park.
Elk Park: Vendors will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; arts, crafts, toys, food, raffle drawings, beer garden, and live music and entertainment all day. There will also be games for children, a tractor rodeo, festival merchandise, the publicly judged John Q Art Show, information booths and an open acoustic jam all day at the River Pavilion in the park. New this year will be a sewing contest with prizes and a raffle for a new Singer sewing machine (proceeds benefit Elk Park).
VFW post: Open to the public all day. Barbecued pork lunch served downstairs by the Ladies Auxiliary from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Live music will be played from 5 to 7 p.m.; a dance is scheduled from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Sunday
Elk Park: Vendors will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with music and entertainment all day. Lawnmower races start at 1 p.m. Raffle and art show winners will be announced.
