Happy geeks gathered at AT&T stores around the country Friday to get their hands on the latest version of the Apple iPhone.

In the NorthTown Mall store, the crowd started gathering before 7 a.m., when the store opened. The first group of about 15 buyers had preordered the new iPhone 3G S and quickly moved inside to complete the purchase.

Eager iPhone fans included first-timers — those who finally succumbed to the cult of the device — as well as some buyers who were trading in an earlier version of the device, which now combines a camera, music player, recorder and video camera.
