NC relay team finishes second

A relay team from North Central High School finished second in the 4x1-mile relay at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday.

Leon Dean, Andrew Kimpel, Alex Avila and Ben Johnston combined for a time of 17 minutes, 22.91 seconds. Since Washington state high school track doesn’t run the event, rather a 4x1,600-meter relay, that time was equivalent to a 17:16.88 in the 4x1,600.

In the distance medley relay, the relay team of Dean, Kimpel, Johnston and Spencer Wordell beat an area record with a time of 10:00.6 to finish fifth in their heat. The time bested the area record of 10:13 and was the second-best time in state history. In the 400 hurdles, Wordell won his heat and finished fifth overall in an event he had never run.

In Washington, high school track runs the 300 hurdles.

Baseball

Billy Moon and Andy Hunter had first-inning run-scoring singles and that was all starter Tyler Olson needed as the Spokane RiverHawks defeated Moses Lake 4-1 in West Coast League play in Moses Lake.

Connor Moore had three hits for Spokane, which improved to 5-6. The Pirates fell to 0-11.
