Barry Manilow cancels Spokane concert – again

By The Spokesman-Review

The Oct. 23 Barry Manilow concert at the Spokane Arena has been cancelled – this time, for good.

Promoters gave a “scheduling conflict” as the reason for the cancellation.

This is the second time the concert has been scrapped. The concert was originally scheduled for March 15, but was postponed until October because of what promoters called the need for “additional rehearsal” in his Las Vegas show.

Tickets purchased via phone or online through TicketsWest will be automatically refunded to the credit card used in the purchase.

If you bought tickets in person, bring your tickets to the Spokane Arena box office, 720 W. Mallon, or mail them to P.O. BOX 6459, Spokane, WA 99217.

Who knows the who, what, when and where’s of the entertainment world. The fact is Barry Manilow with all of his time in grade is not likely the one breaking the dates. Chances are good there are several lawyers and of course the promoters that are doing all of the dickering and breaking all the hearts. They probably won’t get to see Barry either, however they will get paid…for their trouble.

No matter, in Mr. Manilow’s defense…I am a metal music fan. It all started in the sixties…Cream, Blue Cheer to offer a peek into my love of music. In the mid-eightes I surprised a girlfriend with tickets to see Barry (her love) for her birthday. That is the only reason I would have even went close to the venue that night.

Two hours later I emerged a fan of Barry Manilow. I still love my rock and metal but I have never quit on Barry.

Why? He gave one of the best shows I have ever seen. Yeah, we have all hummed and sung along with the commercials that he wrote and have been successful over the years and Mandy has brought a tear to my eyes but what really sold me on him was the way he stopped between sets to talk to his audience. It was obvious that he loves his fans as much as they love him. He spoke of not just dreaming and wanting to be on stage like him but in believing in oneself and have the love and drive to get up and make life happen. He had a mild
mannered force about him that made me understand why my girlfriend had such a warm smile on her face everytime I looked at her.

I have been to more than a dozen of his concerts and always look forward to the next one.

My girlfriend and I have long since gone our separate ways, but we do see each other from time to time. The last time was 5 years ago at a funeral. When we spoke, part of our conversation was about the concert so very long ago,her question being, are you still a fan?
