Power restored to thousands in east central Spokane

By The Spokesman-Review

Avista Utilities says about 3,500 customers went without power for about an hour tonight in east central Spokane, from Wellesley south across Interstate 90 to Seventh Avenue, and from Vista west to Helena.

The power went out around 5 p.m., and crews restored power to all but about 35 customers about 5:45 p.m.. The cause of the outage is unknown.

Many of the same customers were without power for about two hours this morning, after birds flew into lines at the same power substation on Upriver Drive. As many as 6,200 customers were without power during that incident.

Spokane police said traffic congestion occured after many stop lights stopped working during the outage. When lights are out intersections should be treated as four-way stops.
