Cougs split series with Sooners

Shea Vucinich hit two home runs and drove in three runs as Washington State beat No. 16 Oklahoma 10-6 on Sunday to earn a split of the four-game weekend series in Pullman.

Jared Prince hit a two-run home run, Alex Burg drove in three runs and Greg Lagreid had a pair of RBI singles for the Cougars (2-5).

Paris Shewey (1-0) blanked the Sooners (7-3) over 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn his first collegiate victory. Jeremy Johnson struck out six over three innings in his first career save.

Washington State concludes its homestand against Gonzaga at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

•Tyson Van Winkle went 3 for 5 with a double and three RBIs and Jason Chatwood and Royce Bollinger homered as Gonzaga won its sixth in a row, beating Dayton 12-3 at the Phoenix Classic.

Ryan Carpenter (2-0) earned the win for the Bulldogs (6-1), allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts over seven innings.

•Whitworth erupted for a nine-run second inning and made it hold up in a 12-7 Northwest Conference victory over Puget Sound in Tacoma. The Pirates (3-5, 1-2 NWC) and Loggers (4-3, 2-1 NWC) were supposed to play a doubleheader, but the second game was rained out.

Mitch Ramsay went 4 for 4, including a second-inning triple, with three RBIs for Whitworth. J.R. Jarrell also drove in three runs, and Mitch Nelson was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Pirates.

Chad Flett earned the win in a seven-inning complete game for Whitworth, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits.

•Community Colleges of Spokane swept a doubleheader with Grays Harbor Community College, winning 4-0 and 14-6 at Lewiston.

Mike Richard (1-0) earned the win and Rex Ireland recorded his first save of the season in the opener. Martin Aguirre (1-0) was the winner in the nightcap

Softball

Community Colleges of Spokane (2-0) swept a doubleheader with Shoreline Community College, winning 9-8 and 4-0 in Richland.

Heather Jackson (Shadle Park HS) went 2 for 4 with a home run and a game-winning RBI double in the first game. Shelby Bethel (University HS) earned her first win of the season.

In the second game, Tressa Predisik (Shadle Park HS) hit a three-run home run.

Swimming

Michaela Ahlin and Rugile Mileisyte fell short of reaching NCAA automatic cut times in their events as Washington State competed at the Pac-10 Conference Invitational at Federal Way, Wash.

Ahlin broke the school record in the 100 fly with a time of 53.72 seconds, earning her an NCAA “B” cut time. The automatic cut time is 52.02.

Mileisyte time trialed in the 50 freestyle three times, with her best time 22.55 seconds. None of the times beat her mark earlier in the weekend with her leadoff in the 200 free relay (22.45), also a “B” consideration time. The automatic cut time is 21.93 seconds.

Junior hockey

Connor Olstad and Alex Lelwica each had a goal and two assists and Joel Stewart and Tanner Slarks added goals as the Spokane Braves avoided elimination in their Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoff series by beating the Nelson Leafs 4-2 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

The win was Spokane’s first in the playoffs in four years.

The Leafs have a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 series that resumes Tuesday in Nelson, British Columbia.

High school basketball

Rosters have been announced for the sixth annual Idaho State High School All-Star basketball games that will be held March 14 at North Idaho College.

The girls game will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the boys at 3:30. Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens.

Players selected to the North boys team are Austin Black of Lakeland; Nate Frisbie, Ben Frisbie and Jason Wheelock of Lake City; Jared Heitzman, Ryan Young and Peter Gregg of Lewiston; Justin Carter of Post Falls; Jared Bilaski of Wallace; Aaron Corsi of St. Maries; Spencer Swerin of Sandpoint; and Patrick Lagrimanta of Timberlake. The alternates are Merlin Weaselhead of Lakeside and Brian Nelson of Priest River. Dave Cornelia of Lewiston is the coach.
