Clarkston, West Valley post wins

Dustin McConnell and Trey Sobotta were on target from long range and the third-seeded Clarkston Bantams held off the second-seeded Pullman Greyhounds 54-51 in a District 7 2A tournament game Tuesday in Pullman.

McConnell hit 3 of 7 from behind the 3-point line on his way to a team-high 18 points for Clarkston. Sobotta added 15 points, hitting 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. Cody Brown chipped in with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Clarkston knocked down 53 percent (8 of 15) of its 3-pointers for the game.

Pullman’s A.J. Therrien led all scorers with 23 points. He nailed 11 of 12 from the free-throw line.

With the victory, Clarkston (14-8) advances to the winner-to-state district title game against West Valley (17-4) on Thursday in Cheney at Eastern Washington University’s Reese Court. The game will tip off at 8 p.m.

Pullman (15-7) will play Cheney (10-12) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Central Valley High School in a loser-out matchup.

The winner of Pullman versus Cheney will play the loser of the West Valley-Clarkston tilt at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Central Valley for the No. 2 seed to state.

West Valley 62, Cheney 40: Matt Roth poured in 12 of his game-high 22 points in the first quarter to lead the Eagles to a victory over the Blackhawks at West Valley.

Jordan Lupfer-Graham had 14 points, four assists and only two turnovers for West Valley.

Cheney was led by the 10 points of Mike Sprenger.

West Valley used Roth’s hot hand to take a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles’ advantage was 32-16 at halftime.

West Valley shot 58 percent from the floor for the game and held Cheney to 32 percent.
